My mother served as Head Librarian in charge of the large Buena Vista Branch Library in Burbank, California, where she had started as a librarian in 1949.
When she retired and moved to Yachats part time in 1971, she helped organize Yachats volunteers to set up and establish the new public library that opened in 1973.
As a thank you for her many hours of work, in 2006, the Children's Room of the Yachats Library was dedicated to Virginia Chamberlin.
In the early 70s, under her directions, I worked on many projects for the new library.
Before additional help arrived, I moved more than half of the book collection from the old Elementary School to the new library.
Under my mother's direction, I put together a Library Manual for volunteers that explained how to do the various tasks needed to run a library.
I also spent many hours typing book cards needed for the library card file and hand lettering shelf labels for the various sections of the library.
Several other volunteers, including Irma and Lester Ruben and Thelma Green, put in long hours to help set up the Library.
Later, after our family moved to Yachats in 1984-85, my wife, Lynn, served several years as a volunteer Children's Librarian.
As an architect, I also drew up design sketches for the library, but Bob Bibbler, who oversaw the design and construction of the Library by the Angell Job Corp, declined my offer to help.

Dedication of the Children's Room to Virginia Chamberlin, Yachats Library, Yachats, Oregon, USA, 2006.
Originally, this part of the library was a workroom and a meeting room where the City Council held public meetings.
David and Virginia Chamberlin donated a childrens table and chairs for the room and Joni Bixler painted some beautiful animal wall graphics.
